Do you know that you can make a standard cookie cutter by yourself?

And do you know that it takes very simple steps to produce those dream cookies in the shape you have been dreaming of?

How? You will find out.

First, to establish a fact, 3D printing is the process of making three-dimensional objects from a digital file. It uses an additive process where an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the object is created.

3D printing of a cookie-cutter is easier and more fun than you may think. This is because it involves a lot of eating and children, two fun activities.

Some examples of 3D materials are; consumer products, industrial products, and healthcare products. Cookie-cutter is a household item used to make cookies; it is an interesting cooking material used to excite kids. So, just as I have learned it, you can print your 3D cookie cutter.

3D printing of a cookie cutter

You can print a cookie-cutter for your household or to serve commercial purpose; either way, you’ve got to have adequate knowledge to about 3D printing to do it well.  3D printing has never been an easy task; in fact, you will need to learn the skill and a lot of practice to come up with good results.

However, if you have a lot of interest in food and children, you will definitely have so much fun making this household item. You will agree with me that even children like to help out in the kitchen, what way to teach them if not the fun way?

Therefore, cutters with different colors, shapes, and sizes will attract them into the kitchen and to make the cookies themselves.

Why You Should 3D Print Cookie Cutter

Flexible design

With 3D printer, you can create several forms of designs you want to see. And not just that, you can easily make any form of designs whether complex or easy. 3D printer works differently from the traditional means of manufacturing which is limited. 3D printing your cookie cutter will give you access to make various possible designs you want without limitations.

Rapid prototyping

The traditional manufacturing process uses machines and can take days to create just one part of an object, but 3D printer can manufacture the prototype you need for your item within hours. Also, it is less expensive to operate than other machines.

Print on demand

This means that you can print your cookie cutter when it is needed. Unlike the traditional printing procedure, you don’t have to print in bulk using a 3D printer. This makes it saves cost and time.

You can store the designs in a file that is easily accessible. This makes it easier to access and print anytime it is needed and edits can be made at very low costs.

Strong and lightweight part

Plastic is the most commonly used material for 3D printing; this is because of its durability, weight, and lightweight. Although metal can also be used for 3D printing, plastic is more common because of its features that make the process of printing easy.

Fast design and production

3D printing is a fast method of manufacturing. It hastens the process of designing and producing your cookie cutter. You can make your cookie cutter in a day, which is what you will not get from a traditional method.

Minimizing waste

There is a probability that during manufacture, some materials will be wasted as they will have to be primed, filed, and smoothened. In 3D printing, you only design and print as it is; therefore, waste is minimized.

Cost-effective

It saves cost in the sense that you will not have to spend too much producing the products. The cost lies in the printer and the raw materials; you do not need too many people to operate the printer.

As an individual, you can operate the printer, do every other process by yourself. Therefore you may not need to hire more hands unless you seem it fit. You also do not need other machines as a single machine is only required.

Easy access

These 3D printers are becoming more accessible to use. Local manufacturers are now getting easy access to the printers and are learning the skill of operation; it makes it easier to produce in your state.

In the long run, it cuts the costs of importing goods from other countries like; China.

Environmental friendly

Apart from the fact that it reduces material wastage, it is also environmentally friendly. Most times, though, the lightweight printers are more environmentally friendly. Nevertheless, the printer, in general, is great for the atmosphere. Hence, you can produce your cookie cutter without harming your environment.

Steps to Print a 3D cookie Cutter

Step 1: Gather materials to be used. These materials include; rubber, cookie dough, and a 3D printer.

Step 2: download a cookie model or design by yourself on the software, any design you have in mind.

Step 3: you need just one software for your activity. Fusion 360 is the best CAD for any download.

Step 4: find an image you want to make a cookie-cutter from. You can get the image on Google.

Step 5: Import the image to Fusion 360

Step 6: trace the line around your image with a spline

Step 7: create an outline of the line by clicking on the line that we just made and hitting O on the keyboard, we can create an outline of the line. It will be set to 0.8mm, which will be double the 3D printer nozzle size (2 perimeters).

Step 8: select all parts of the wall that will cut the cookie and extrude it by clicking E on the keyboard.

Step 9: select all the other parts that will have the designs for the cookie. It will not cut the cookie but design it.

Step 10: add supports for the bodies.

Step 11: join everything together. The bodies and supports should be joined together; make sure you hit ok.

Step 12: print and enjoy making designs on your cookie dough.

Limitations of 3D printing

Limited materials

Plastic and metal are the commonly used materials for production, although these materials are not always available. Not all plastics and metals can be 3D printed; some of them cannot withstand the printing pressure.

In order for you to get a good result, it is advisable to find raw materials that can withstand the 3D printing pressure and at the same time give you the results you want to see.

Restriction of build size

The size of any product being produced using this machine may take some time before it is completed. This is because the machine is made to produce things in small parts. Therefore, when a product requires large parts, the printer can only print in small quantities, they will be joined together mechanically.

Design inaccuracies

Some machines have low tolerance; therefore, the outcome of designs may not exactly be something you like. It may differ from the original design.  It can be corrected in post-processing, but this can be a little time-consuming.

Copyright issues

As 3D printers are getting more popular and widely used, there is a probability that duplicate of original products will be created. The products may look so much alike that you will not be able to tell the difference. This has evident issues around copywriting and quality control.
